WoW Classic players makes over 100,000 gold by abusing the layering system

A new WoW Classic exploit allowed a guild to generate over 100,000 gold by abusing the layering system, which let it skip a dungeon right to the final boss and farm it for money and loot. WoW Classic is almost a complete preservation of the World of Warcraft experience circa 2006, but the small changes that Blizzard made to help account for the expected long player queues have been the source of the few exploits players have found early in the game's existence.

The game-breaking bug took advantage of the layering system, letting him skip the entirety of a dungeon before repeatedly killing the final boss. Normally, a team of five to 10 players would spend up to an hour to reach the end of a dungeon. But a Reddit user bypassed this by leaving his group, reinviting his teammates, and resetting the dungeon. Before the introduction of layering in Classic, this exploit wasn’t an option. Reforming a group is intended to teleport players to the entrance of the dungeon. With layering, though, it appears to be a different story.
In WoW, Blizzard created multiple copies of the world, or layers, on each server. Each layer contains a number of players and helps the game run smoothly. Because of layering, two players on the same server can be on the same exact spot without seeing each other. However, if one player invites the other to a group, the invited player will join the layer of the one who sent the invite. WoW Classic players discovered an exploit of the layering system Blizzard uses in the game to distribute a server's population. Blizzard fixed the exploit and will take "appropriate punitive measures" for those who made use of it according to a post by the developer on the game's message boards Monday.

Layering isn’t supposed to work this way, and as a result, Blizzard has stepped in and vowed to deploy a worldwide bug fix by the next realm reset. “As soon as possible, we will identify those who knowingly abused this bug in exploitative manner,” community manager Kaivax wrote on the Blizzard forums. “We will then take appropriate punitive measures.” It’s unclear exactly what will happen to the Reddit user and his guild, but it looks like a swift ban could be in the cards.
